ABOUT
Zach
My name is Zachary Blankenship, most people call me Bambam. It gets shortened to Bam a lot of the time. I love to eat steak and pick up heavy objects. I cook a mean fried egg and make strong coffee. I grew up just south of Jacksonville Florida in Fleming Island. I have played sports and heard about Jesus for as long as I can remember. I was very blessed to have parents that involved me in the church from a young age. I am an extrovert, and through this God has given me so many strong individuals in my life to call "brother". I love to learn, especially new things, difficult subjects. I was a math major and computer science minor in college. Historical context revolving around the Bible is a new passion of mine.
Ive been through two large athletic injuries. I tore my throwing arm labrum in highschool and a tore my nonthrowing pec in pro ball. Both of these injuries pushed me closer to God and furthered my reliance on Jesus as I was reminded "I don't got this". These injuries, coupled with great strength coaches, helped ignite my passion for biomechanics.
I was never the most talented growing up. It was the accumulated days on consistency that eventually added up. God had been planning far longer than I was aware. I ended up playing through high school, into JUCO at St Johns, and finishing my collegiate career at Valdosta State. I won my first ever championship with the Beavers in the United Shores Professional Baseball League my rookie year, then went on to play for the Washington Wild Things and the Gateway Grizzlies the following year in the Frontier League before getting released. I left after the allstar break and was a Party Animal for 2 seasons, one of them being a championship in 2023. I am now entering my second season with the Texas Tailgaters.
Without the redeeming grace and mercy of the Father through Jesus Christ I would be nothing, because of Him I get to call myself His son!

What number(s) have you worn?
37
When did you first give your life to Christ and what led you to that decision?
In 2008, during Awana class at Downtown Southern Baptist. I wanted to follow Jesus and get to know Him better.
How has your relationship with Jesus changed your life?
Quite literally my entire life. I am a new, free man through the sacrifice and blood of Jesus Christ!
What challenges has your faith overcome?
My two injuries in my career have been the largest challenges Ive experienced. But both of them pushed me closer to God and I am better because they happened.
It was like a reminder, a tap on my shoulder saying "Hey you remember who gave you all this yeah?". To then get to kneel and surrender my circumstances to my eternally graceful Savior was relieving.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about believing in Jesus?
GO ALL IN! Jesus is waiting with pierced, open arms for you to turn and call His name!
What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Luke 10:19-20,
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
Verse 19 is so empowering! Jesus has given us the authority to overcome the enemy and NOTHING will harm us. At the same time, as soon as I get rallied up in my selfish nature, verse 20 tell us what to be rallied up for. To rejoice because our names are written in Heaven!
Its not about the power, it's about the grace.
Who has impacted your spiritual journey the most, and how?
Chris Bretton, when I tore my labrum I didn't have sports so I got involved with one of my local churches. This man met with myself and Matt Boyett at 5am to disciple us before class started during high school. I was at a low point in my athletic career and he encouraged me to continue to place my faith in Jesus. Chris was the first person to introduce me to the original Hebrew text, helping to teach me how to study the Bible.
What does living out your faith in professional sports look like?
The same way it does in every profession! Learning how to love those around me better through Jesus, ministering and living life with them in the hopes that they would accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
What message do you hope fans take away after scanning your card?
That God can provide miracles in your life but you must first believe!
What advice would you give a younger athlete about faith and sports?
Do it now! Whatever it is, read the Bible, take out the trash, clean the counter, workout, etc. Work is a gift given to us from God, embrace it and find joy in it.
So, What is the Gospel?
What if understanding the Gospel was as easy as running the bases? Good news. It is. Join Mickey Weston as he steps up to the plate and walks through the Gospel using the simple, familiar rhythm of baseball. From home plate to first, second, third, and back home, faith becomes clear, approachable, and unforgettable. No religious jargon, no pressure. Just Good News explained in a way that makes sense and brings you home.
